Wax-Dipped Cartons for Iced, Hydrocooled and Cold Chain Produce

Looking for wax-dipped cartons that stay strong when ice melts, cartons sweat in the cooler or pallets sit for days in a reefer container? BINH MINH P.A.T PACKAGING manufactures custom waxed produce boxes in Vietnam for growers, packers, exporters and fresh produce distributors.

For 2027 harvest programs, we welcome enquiries for wax-dipped and wax-coated corrugated cartons for broccoli, leafy greens, sweet corn, melons and tropical fruit. Share your requirements for US or Australian operations so we can discuss board grade, wax level, printing and supply arrangements.

Fresh produce is one of the hardest products to pack. It is heavy, it keeps breathing after harvest and it is often cooled with water or ice. A carton that looks fine in the warehouse can fail after a few hours in a wet coolroom. This guide explains when wax-dipped cartons are the right choice, how they compare with other waxed corrugated boxes and what to prepare before you request a quote.

Price: Quotation based on specifications and quantity. Minimum order quantity: [confirm] Place of origin: Vietnam.

What Are Wax-Dipped Cartons?

Wax-dipped cartons are corrugated boxes that are fully immersed in hot wax after they are cut and formed. The wax soaks into the liners and the fluted medium, then hardens as the carton cools. The result is a box that resists water on every surface, including the cut edges and hand holes where standard board usually absorbs moisture first.

How the Wax-Dipping Process Works

The carton blanks are printed, die-cut and glued or assembled as flat sheets. They are then dipped into a wax bath, drained and cooled. Because the whole carton goes into the wax, the treatment covers the inside, the outside and every edge. The amount of wax the board takes up depends on the board grade, the wax temperature and the dipping time, so the wax level is agreed during sampling.

Wax-Dipped Cartons vs Standard Corrugated Boxes

Standard corrugated boxes work well for dry goods and for produce kept in dry, stable conditions. Once they are wet, they lose most of their stacking strength, the glue joints can open and the print can run. Wax-dipped cartons cost more per unit, but they keep their shape in conditions where a standard box would collapse. For iced and wet-packed produce, that difference decides whether the load arrives in sellable condition.

Why Should You Choose Wax-Dipped Cartons for Fresh Produce?

Standard corrugated board absorbs water. Once the fibres soak up melting ice or condensation, the box softens and loses much of its stacking strength. Wax-dipped cartons are fully immersed in wax, so the liners, flutes and cut edges are sealed against moisture.

Strength That Holds Up Under Ice and Water

In the US, broccoli and other vegetables are commonly packed in waxed broccoli boxes and topped with ice or liquid ice at the packing house. A wax-dipped carton keeps its shape while the ice melts, so the pack arrives intact and the box does not collapse onto the produce.

Stable Stacking in Cold Storage and Reefer Containers

Cold rooms and refrigerated containers run at high humidity. Moisture resistant produce boxes keep their compression strength through long storage, which protects the bottom layers of a pallet and reduces claims at arrival.

Suitable for Hydrocooling and Wet Handling

Hydrocooled produce goes into the carton wet. Wax-dipped cartons accept water spray and wet product without delaminating, which makes them a practical choice for sweet corn, celery, leafy greens and similar items.

Better Performance on Long-Distance Export Routes

Produce shipped from Asia to the US West Coast or to Australian ports spends weeks in the cold chain. Waxed cartons for export help the pack survive temperature changes between the farm, the port and the distribution centre.

Clear Branding Even in Wet Conditions

The wax layer protects printed artwork from smudging and water marks. Your logo, commodity name, count and traceability codes stay readable through the cold chain and on the receiving dock.

Lower Risk of Rejected Loads

A collapsed pallet costs far more than the cartons on it. Receivers in the US and Australia inspect packaging on arrival, and crushed or wet boxes can lead to rejected loads, repacking costs and lost shelf life. Choosing the right carton at the start protects the value of the produce, not only the box.

Wax-Dipped Cartons for Different Fresh Produce Needs

Waxed Produce Boxes for US Growers and Shippers

For US operations sourcing wax boxes for produce, the brief should cover the commodity, count, pack weight with ice and the pallet pattern used by your receivers. Common applications include broccoli, sweet corn, green onions, bok choy, celery and cantaloupe.

Share your cooling method and how long the pallets stay in storage. These details help define the board grade, wax level and drain hole layout to check during sampling.

Many US shippers field-pack broccoli and other vegetables, palletize the cartons and add ice at the packing house. In this process, the carton must handle rough field handling, a heavy load of ice and long refrigerated truck routes across the country. A clear brief helps us balance strength and cost for each step.

Waxed Fruit and Vegetable Cartons for Australia

For Australian packers and exporters, waxed fruit and vegetable boxes are used for iced vegetables, seafood-adjacent fresh lines and produce moving through humid northern supply chains. Confirm that the carton footprint works with the standard Australian pallet and your coolroom layout.

Your waxed cartons can carry your brand, grower number and commodity details in clear print. Tell us whether the cartons go to domestic markets, wholesale markets or export so the specification matches the route.

Australian produce often travels long distances by road between growing regions and capital city markets, then sits in coolrooms before it reaches retailers. Cartons need to stay firm through each transfer, from the packing shed to the distribution centre and the supermarket floor.

Leafy Greens, Celery and Sweet Corn

Leafy greens and celery are often packed wet and cooled quickly to protect crispness. Sweet corn is commonly hydrocooled or top-iced. These products need cartons with enough ventilation for cold air or water to move through, and enough wax protection to keep the corners and walls firm.

Tropical Fruit and Melon Cartons

Mangoes, dragon fruit, papaya and melons release moisture during cold storage and long sea freight. Wax-dipped trays and telescope cartons help these heavier packs keep their shape through the voyage. Each fruit should have its own specification for size, vent holes and inserts.

Wax-Dipped vs Other Waxed Corrugated Boxes

Not every produce line needs a fully dipped carton. Use the table to match the treatment to your cooling method.

How to Choose the Right Waxed Carton

  1. List how the produce is cooled: top-ice, liquid ice, hydrocooling or forced air.
  2. Estimate the longest time the pallet stays in cold storage or in transit.
  3. Check how high the cartons are stacked and the weight of each pack, including ice.
  4. Confirm whether your customer has recycling or packaging requirements.
  5. Test samples with your real produce and cooling process before you approve the specification.

What to Include in Your Quote Request

To receive an accurate quotation for wax-dipped cartons, please send the following details:

  • Commodity and count per carton
  • Pack weight, including ice if used
  • Internal carton dimensions or your current carton sample
  • Cooling method and expected storage time
  • Pallet size and stacking height
  • Artwork, number of print colours and estimated annual quantity
  • Destination market: US, Australia or other

Sustainability and Recycling Considerations

Wax-dipped cartons give the strongest protection against ice and water, but the wax makes them unsuitable for standard paper recycling in both the US and Australia. Many US retailers and Australian businesses following the Australian Packaging Covenant (APCO) now ask suppliers about recyclable options.

We recommend wax-dipped cartons where ice, water or long storage make them necessary. For produce with lighter moisture exposure, ask us about curtain-coated or wax alternative constructions and test them with your actual product before switching.

A practical approach is to review your range line by line. Keep wax-dipped cartons for the products that really need them, such as iced broccoli, and move drier lines to lighter treatments. This reduces the amount of waxed packaging your customers handle without putting the produce at risk.

Product Features

Custom Sizes and Pallet Fit

Develop the carton around your pack weight, count and pallet footprint. Confirm the stacking pattern and test the sample with your product, ice and cooling process.

Wax Level Matched to Your Cold Chain

Select the wax treatment by exposure: full dipping for top-iced packs, lighter treatments for condensation only. This avoids paying for more wax than your produce needs.

Custom Logo and Traceability Printing

Create custom printed produce boxes with your logo, commodity name, count, grower number and barcode area. Artwork can be coordinated across all carton sizes in your range.

Sampling and Testing Before Mass Production

Every new carton starts with a sample. Check the fit, stacking, drainage and print with your own produce, ice and cooling process, then confirm the final specification in writing before mass production begins.

Consistent Supply for Multiple Seasons

For growers and distribution programs, keep an approved specification for each size and design. Recorded board grade, wax level and artwork versions support repeat orders season after season.

Packaging & Shipping

  • Packaging Details: Usually: 10-20 pcs per one carton or one buddle; also accept the customers package style
