What are double sided printed boxes?

Double sided printed boxes are custom packaging boxes printed on both the outer surface and the inner surface of the board. The outside carries your logo, product name and shelf graphics. The inside carries a pattern, a brand color, a message or product information.

In the US market they are often called inside printed boxes or custom boxes printed inside and out. In Australia, buyers usually search for custom printed boxes, printed cardboard boxes or personalised mailer boxes. They all describe the same product.

Popular box styles for double sided printing

Almost any folding box style can be printed on both sides. These are the styles our US and Australian customers order most often.

Mailer boxes

The roll end tuck front mailer is the classic e-commerce box. When the customer lifts the lid, the full inside panel is visible at once, which makes it the best canvas for an inside print. We produce mailer boxes in E flute for light products and B flute for heavier items.

Tuck end boxes

Reverse tuck end and straight tuck end boxes are the standard choice for cosmetics, supplements and small retail products. A printed interior adds a pop of color when the customer opens the top flap on the shelf or at home.

Folding cartons with inserts

For products that need to sit still, we combine a printed outer carton with a printed paperboard insert. Both parts can carry your brand color, so the whole pack looks consistent from every angle.

Two-piece boxes with a separate lid and base are popular for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day gift sets. Printing the inside of the lid with a greeting or seasonal pattern makes the box feel like part of the gift.

Sleeve and drawer boxes

A printed outer sleeve slides over an inner tray. The tray can be printed in a contrasting color, so the reveal happens as the customer pulls the drawer open.

Shipping boxes (RSC)

Regular slotted cartons are usually plain, but a simple one-color inside print turns a standard shipping box into a branded box at a modest extra cost. This works well for subscription brands that ship in larger cartons.

Special finishes

Gloss or matte lamination, spot UV, hot foil stamping, cold foil, embossing and debossing. Finishes can be applied to the outside and the inside surfaces separately.

What affects the price of double sided printed boxes

The unit price of a box printed inside and out depends on a few clear factors. Knowing them helps you plan a budget and get an accurate quote faster.

Order quantity

Printing plates, die-cutting tools and machine setup are fixed costs. The more boxes you order, the more those costs are spread out, so the price per box drops sharply as quantity rises.

Print coverage and colors

Full color CMYK on both sides costs more than full color outside and one Pantone color inside. A flood coat of a single brand color inside is a popular middle option.

Material and flute

White coated board prints brighter colors than kraft board. Double wall corrugated costs more than single wall, but it is needed for heavy or fragile products.

Finishes

Lamination, foil stamping, spot UV and embossing each add a production step. We usually recommend placing premium finishes on the outside and keeping the inside print simple.

Box size and structure

Larger boxes use more board, and complex structures with inserts or windows need extra tooling and hand work. Our engineers can often adjust a dieline to fit more boxes on each printed sheet, which lowers the cost.

Artwork tips for printing inside a box

Inside printing needs a little more planning than outside printing, because the design is seen from a different angle once the box is folded. These tips help your artwork come out right the first time.

Start from the dieline

Always design on the dieline we provide. It shows which panels face inward, where the folds and glue flaps are, and which areas will be hidden after assembly.

Check the orientation

Text on the inside of a mailer lid must read the right way up when the lid is open, not when the box is flat. Our prepress team marks the reading direction on every inside panel.

Keep a safe zone

Leave at least 3 mm bleed and keep important text away from folds and cut lines. Glue areas must stay unprinted so the box bonds properly.

Use strong contrast

The inside of a box is often seen in softer light. Bold colors and large text read better than fine detail or thin lines.

Keep the message short

One clear line works best: a thank-you, a hashtag or a QR code. The inside print should feel like a surprise, not a manual.
